Dit geuzenlied, geschreven op een bestaande melodie, werd in 1581 voor het eerst gepubliceerd in "Een nieu Geusen Lieden Boecxken [...]". De tekst moet echter van voor 1570 stammen, het jaar waarin de tekstschrijver M. Arent Dirksz. Vos als ketter werd gewurgd en verbrand. Dirksz. Vos schreef met "Slaet op den trommele" een felle aanklacht tegen de paus en de Katholieke kerk. Wij hebben zijn eerste couplet als refrein gebruikt en er zelf een zestal coupletten bijgeschreven.
